Get to Know Rima
Rima is not just a candidate; she's a dedicated member of our community with hands-on lived experiences. As a healthcare worker, educator, and mother raising her family right here in House District 33, Rima understands the unique challenges and aspirations of our neighbors.
Rima Mohammad’s journey is rooted in resilience and a deep commitment to community service.
As a daughter and granddaughter of Palestinian refugees who fled their homes during the violence of 1948, Rima's upbringing was marked by hardship and struggle.
Her parents lived in refugee camps in Lebanon and endured unfathomable conditions. They had one goal in mind, to get their children to a place where they can live a dignified life.
At the age of five, Rima’s family immigrated to the United States in pursuit of the American dream and a better life. At their arrival, they faced significant financial, social, and emotional challenges, including racism and poverty. Rima attributes her success to the public resources, aid, and opportunities provided to her, fueling her desire to give back and serve her community that invested in her.
Rima currently serves as a professor at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, bringing over 19 years of experience as an educator, clinician, and researcher. She earned her Doctorate in Pharmacy from the University of Cincinnati and completed post-graduate residency training at the University of Michigan. Throughout her career, Rima has taught and practiced at various universities and has been actively involved in volunteer activities at the local, state, and national level within medical and pharmacy organizations. Her contributions have been recognized with awards such as the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy Excellence in Teaching Award and Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.
In addition to her professional endeavors, Rima is deeply rooted in her community. She returned to Ann Arbor nearly 11 years ago, with her husband, where their multi-ethnic family are active members of the community. Driven by a passion for equity and representation, Rima entered public service by running for the Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education in 2022. She aimed to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities and ensure inclusive decision-making within the school system. As the first Arab-American elected to the Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education, Rima served with distinction, ultimately holding the positions of Vice President and President. Her track record reflects a staunch advocacy for marginalized and vulnerable communities.
